The Big Bridal Wear Trends to Watch 2016

This year has been a year of romantic low backs and illusion detail, sheer long-sleeved dresses and fringing mixed with elegant lace have been all the rage for brides wanting to celebrate their marriage in style. So what new trends will brides be wearing down the aisle for the year ahead? At an exclusive red carpet event in Barcelona recently, we found out the latest on some of the ground breaking designs this autumn/winter, and the exciting new twists on traditional styles set to shape bridal wear for 2016.

Illusion Tulle

Wedding dresses become more daring with this flesh coloured or sheer netting popular for the arms, back and the bodice. Although illusion bodices are a popular bridal look, designers are now creating impact with dramatic and intricate lace detailing, set with crystals and embroidery to cover just the right places. Designers such as Provonias and Martina Liana have shown that illusion tulle can create a unique and romantic appeal with their fabulous range of embroidered designs set over the delicate tulle. In 2016, beautifully laced bodices will be more tightly woven with layers of sheer lining, for dresses which are bound to intrigue.

A Twist on Traditional Textures

Three-dimensional embellishments are set to go beyond the traditional floral appliqué. Textured blooms will be oversized to make a statement, and layers of tulle will be opulently adorned with 3-D fluttering butterflies and beaded flowers. Many brides to be are still favouring the glamourous 1920s and vintage style dresses, as seen in collections from designers including Eliza Jane Howell, Louise Bentley and Brighton Belle. Continuing from this trend will see the arrival of feathers as a wedding dress staple. From small feathering at the waist to a full feathered skirt, this textured trend adds a luxurious twist to traditional shaped gowns.

Less is More

Tasteful keyhole cut-outs, thigh-high slits and plunging necklines dominated the bridal wear catwalks for 2016. Other looks focused on revealing the back with illusion tulle whilst maintaining a traditional, sophisticated high neckline. Choosing a dress with one of these features will give a sultry and chic edge to a simpler, elegant design.

A Change of Tone

For a more subtle take on the new wedding dress trends, opting for designs in warmer tones of blush, champagne and soft pale golds, is a perfect way to dazzle whilst wearing traditional shapes and styles. Barely there pinks, nudes and stone-washed colours will be a big hit next year, especially for a spring wedding.

A Skirt to Intrigue

The graceful fishtail is set to be more popular than the fuller skirt for autumn this year and spring 2016. Skirts are also getting a revamp with overskirt layering and add-ons, with swirling patterns and unusual pleating. These details create a flowing and ethereal look, building on the forming of illusions and a dreamy approach to design so prevalent in the designer pieces setting the trends.
